Diabetes Type 1 - Causes and Symptoms

Type 1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes or insulindependent diabetes (IDDM). Of all the people with diabetes about 10%of them have Type 1 diabetes.In type 1 diabetes, beta cells producelittle or no insulin. Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in thebloodstream instead of going into the cells. The body is unable to usethis glucose for energy. This leads to the symptoms of type 1diabetes.

It is most common in people of non-Hispanic white persons of NorthernEuropean descent, followed by African Americans and HispanicAmericans. It is relatively rare in those of Asian descent.

Causes of Type 1 diabetes

  • Type1, also called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a disorder of the body's immune system

  • It is slightly more common in men than in women.
  • Environmental factors, such as certain types of viral infections, formula feeding beginning before age 3 months and exposure to certain food additives, such as nitrates and nitrosamines, may also contribute.
